One feature of Old Line Primitive Baptist worship services that is somewhat unusual to some people is the fact that our song services are strictly a cappella (unaccompanied). While it is true that there are many references to instrumental music in Old Testament worship, we find none in the New Testament. And if we would not adopt the animal sacrifices of the Mosaic worship, we do not think we should take up other parts of it that are not commanded in the New Testament.
We readily admit that a simple, unaccompanied song service, especially one sung by untrained voices, is not very impressive from a natural standpoint. However, we are not singing to impress men, but to worship God; and He knows what is in our hearts, even if what comes from our mouths is somewhat out of tune. God commanded the church to use an “instrument” that has a soul attached to it, so that the same entity that produces the sound also produces the adoration. That cannot be said of any other musical apparatus.
